"Carved words"
Born in 1946, Jean-Paul Douziech became involved in art very early on. By taking courses at the National School of Art and Design on rue Madame in Paris, he did his apprenticeship, mainly in painting and decoration. He completed his first commission, a fresco for the St-Joseph church in Montrouge (Haut-de-Seine), at the age of 17.
Extravagant architectures, surreal men and bestiaries populate his fantastic imagination. Jean-Paul Douziech astonishes, detonates and amuses with his iconoclastic art where humor competes with poetry. His participation in works for Dali will direct his sculpture towards surrealism and fantasy. “When I sculpt animals, it is for their plasticity and their aesthetics, but it is above all the beast that interests me and that I want to evoke with the shifts of a La Fontaine”.
His bestiary is unusual. Through the prism of his reflection, the beast is restored to us as a metaphor for man but also for the man who makes the beast. Starting from a sketch, a title, he creates a sculpture which he accompanies with a text, a poem or an aphorism. The work is the transcription of a reflection, of a desire, finding its extension in words. Forms and language order a whole. Jean-Paul Douziech takes us into a surreal world, combining humor and poetry and confronting fantasy with the absurdity of man.
His research has attracted numerous galleries and museum institutions, such as the Air Museum in Paris, (acquisition), the Riquewhir Museum in Alsace, (acquisition), the Museum of Fine Arts of Rouen Seine-Maritime , the Georges Pompidou Center, the Postal Museum in Paris, the Aquarium Museum in Nancy, the Engine Museum in Saumur.
